The University of Toronto SAGE chapter is the first established chapter of The Sage Project, bringing together students to promote the organization’s mission through community events, collaboration, and leadership. It all started in the course “HMB440: Dementia” taught by Dr. Franco Taverna. As part of this course, students become weekly friendly visitors in long-term care homes across the city of Toronto, fostering a close friendship with a resident. When COVID hit, these in-person visits ended abruptly. Seeking to sustain the connections they had fostered, a group of students in the course came together and founded SAGE.

Programs

Companion Calls

Connect volunteers with residents in senior homes through phone and video calls. Through sharing stories, connecting over hobbies, and getting to know one another, we are keeping spirits up during this difficult time.

Pen Pal Letters

Keep residents company during lockdown and to help them remain integrated in their
communities.

Bloom Together

Gardening improves the overall quality of life for residents. We provided long-term care homes with gardening tools, soil, plants, and flowers to help engage residents in a fun and relaxing communal outdoor activity.
